FAVORITE FINDS of Kenya

After being in Kenya for a month, we have found our FAVORITE FINDS in this interesting place.  Here are a few of them:
  • Stoney Tangawizi: It only costs 30¢, and you can get it at the store across the street.  It is a very strong ginger ale, and has now earned its status as the family’s favorite pop.
  • Jamil’s mini market: It is the same store mentioned above, and it doesn’t just sell Stoney.  Along with some fruits and vegetables, they sell a variety of rice, beans, and sugar by the kilo out of 4 foot tall burlap bags.

  • ⒷBrood: This is a bakery that has become our new weekly stop.  It sells good coffee, chewy, flaky croissants, and good sourdough bread, which is scarce here in Kenya.

  • JD tennis academy: A tennis school only half a block away, this place has three courts and amazing instructors.

  • Corn lady: This lady grills corn on the corner right outside of our gate, and we can buy a cob of corn for only 50¢.  She puts lime and cayenne on it so the flavor is good, and it is best when eaten hot.  Unfortunately, once it cools the corn is hard to the point that it is difficult to eat.

  • M-Pesa: This amazing technology makes paying easy.  You have an app on your phone with your own unique ID #, and you can add money onto your account.  When you buy something at a store, you simply put in the ID # of the store, punch in the amount you want to pay, hit send and presto! you just sent them money, credit card and cash free.

  • Uber: Although we knew about uber before we came here, we hardly ever used it. (why would we, we owned a car)  Now, we’re finding that since its cheaper than in the U.S. and we don’t have a car, we take Ubers at least 4 times a week.

  • Market Nearby: This market has everything from plug adapters (Africa uses the plug the UK uses) to fresh fruit to luggage.

  • Digestive Biscuits: These yummy graham-cracker-like biscuits are now one of our favorite on-the-go snacks.  They are sweet, but not as sweet as a cookie, and are the perfect snack size.

  • Yummy Avocados: You can buy giant, ripe avocados for only $0.30, and so we are eating a lot more than we do in the States, which is amazing.

  • Chapati: You can buy chapati, which is a cross between a tortilla and naan, from a man selling it on the street, for only $0.20.

  • Kenyan tea: This tea has fresh ginger and freshly ground cardamon.  It uses loose tea leaves instead of tea bags, which makes it better, in my opinion.
These FAVORITE FINDS are just a few of the many things that we have discovered here, and I am sure that there will be many more in the next month of our journey in Kenya.
